In only 5 steps to a cosy & functional children's room

Jules aka @mrshabitat has turned her passion into her profession and is an interior stylist for children's rooms. "On the one hand I help others decorate their kids' rooms, and on the other hand I take product photos for companies." she tells us. "Like the many great kidsroom brands that are out there now, I specialise in children's and babies' rooms. From complete redecoration or a makeover to the finishing touches, my heart just beats faster for beautiful kids' rooms that are also cosy and functional." You can see her own kids' rooms on Instagram. Here, Jules shares a few of her tips and tricks for decorating a baby/kid's room.

1. Start with the essentials

My tip: start planning from the basic layout and size of the room and plan the essentials first - that means before you think about what colour the wall should be, start decorating and hanging shelves, decide on the larger pieces of furniture first. Be sure to think about where they would fit - if you mark the position of the furniture on the floor with washi tape, you can see the real dimensions right away.

2. Must-haves - less is more

A nice cot and a changing unit with drawers for the cute baby clothes are my must haves and are enough for the beginning. My tip: Invest in high-quality furniture that grows with your baby - then you'll get something out of it for longer and it will be easier to resell later. For a child's or teenager's room, a bed, desk and wardrobe are most important. A loft bed creates space - you can cuddle, play and read underneath it or have extra room for dresser or a desk.

3. Storage space is everything!

It's easy to accumulate a lot of things to store and a room doesn't look so cluttered if most of the toys are hidden behind closed doors. In small rooms, you can use bed drawers and storage baskets or boxes to keep things tidy. You can mix and match, but the more uniform they are, the tidier it will look. So it's better to choose one colour or one material.

4. Colour scheme

My tip - plain furniture, white, grey or wood, you won't get tired of so quickly and you can quickly create a new atmosphere with different coloured accessories such as bed linen, great rugs and posters or even decorate in a very colourful way. Curtains, a canopy and various cushions also make a room cosy. Do your children like action heroes or horse bedding and you're not a fan of them? Put a nice bedspread over them during the day and you won't see them anymore.

5. The icing on the cake

A little decoration is also a must in the children's room. The most beautiful toys, buildings or cuddly toys can be displayed on hooks and small open shelves. To keep things from looking too cluttered, it's best to stay minimalist and limit yourself to your current favourites. It's better to redecorate more often. Every child has his or her own passions and hobbies and sooner or later wants to be involved in the decor. A tip - posters and pictures, whether painted by yourself or cut out of newspapers, always look more elegant when framed.
